How to Get a Driving Licence in South Africa (2026)

Two stages, the documents your DLTC actually wants, Gauteng's online booking rule, and a realistic 2026 wait for the plastic card.

Getting a South African driving licence is two appointments, not one big day. First you sit a learner's test. Then, while that paper is still valid, you book a practical at a Driving Licence Testing Centre, pass it, pay the issuing fee, and wait for the credit-card licence. The national government page still says four to six weeks for the card. In 2026 that is a published estimate, not a promise, and you should plan for longer if your centre is running behind.

If you already hold Code B and you only want to know whether you need EB to tow a trailer or caravan, that is a different question. Use the EB licence towing checker for the 750 kg line, then come back here if you still need to sit the upgrade.

Choose the right licence code

The vehicle you intend to drive decides both the learner's code and the driving-licence code. Confirm the mass limits with your DLTC if you are sitting anything heavier than a car, or a motorcycle.

CodeWhat it coversMinimum age on test day
A1Motorcycle up to 125 cc, with or without a sidecar17
AMotorcycle above 125 cc, with or without a sidecar18
BLight motor vehicle, including a minibus, bus or goods vehicle, with GVM up to 3,500 kg18
C1Motor vehicle, minibus, bus or goods vehicle from 3,500 kg to 16,000 kg18
CMotor vehicle, bus or goods vehicle above 16,000 kg18
EBLight articulated vehicle or combination within the 3,500 kg limits18
EC1Heavy articulated vehicle or combination, 3,500 kg to 16,000 kg18
ECHeavy articulated vehicle or combination above 16,000 kg18

For the learner's licence the national government uses three codes, not the A/B/C set. Code 1 is motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles (16 for a bike up to 125 cc, 18 if it is bigger). Code 2 is vehicles up to 3,500 kg, and you must be at least 17 on the test date. Code 3 is vehicles above 3,500 kg, from 18. Most people sitting a car test are Code 2, then Code B.

An old Code 08 or Code 8 card was usually converted to EB when the plastic card was printed. Read the code on the card you are carrying rather than guessing. If you are towing, the EB towing checker uses the plated trailer GVM, not how heavy the trailer is sitting empty today.

Stage one: get a learner's licence

A learner's licence shows you know the signs, the controls and the rules of the road. It is valid for 24 months and cannot be extended. You may only drive while a licensed driver sits next to you. If the vehicle needs a professional driving permit, the supervisor must hold that permit too.

Start with the DLTC that serves your area. If you live in Gauteng, the national government tells you to apply online for a learner's licence through NaTIS. In other provinces, ask whether the centre takes appointments, walk-ins, or its own online booking. You will still attend in person for identity checks, the eyesight test, biometrics and the written or computerised test.

Complete the LL1 Application for a Learner's Licence and pay the booking fee. Fees are not set nationally. The South African Government tells you to ask your local licensing office for the current amount, so do that before you travel.

What to takeWhat actually happens
Identity documentOriginal accepted ID. Ask the centre whether a passport or permit is enough for your status.
PhotographsThe national page lists two identical black-and-white photos. Western Cape currently asks for two ID-sized photos, 35 mm by 45 mm, black-and-white or colour. Confirm number, size and colour before you visit a photographer.
Proof of addressPostal and residential address if the centre wants it. If the bill is not in your name, the owner generally makes an affidavit with the bill attached. Informal settlements may need a ward councillor letter with an official date stamp.
Medical certificate (MC)Required if you are 65 or older. The form is at the DLTC and on eNaTIS.
PaymentWhatever method that centre actually takes. Many no longer take cash.

You sit an eyesight test at the centre, or you submit the prescribed result from a qualified optometrist. If you need glasses or contact lenses, test and practise with them, and keep them with you on the day. Discovering an eyesight problem after the booking is a wasted appointment.

On the test date, take the booking receipt and your ID. If you pass and pay the required fee, the national government page says the learner's licence is issued the same day.

How to prepare for the learner's test

Use the official NaTIS learner-driver resources where they are available, then a reputable learner-driver manual. Study in short sessions. You should be able to recognise signs by shape, colour and meaning, explain right-of-way, name the vehicle controls and dashboard warnings, and apply the rules to a real intersection, not only to a question bank.

Practise until you can say why an answer is correct. Memorising isolated answers is how people fail a slightly reworded question. Schedule the eyesight check early if you already suspect you need lenses.

Stage two: book and pass the practical test

Once you have the learner's, apply to book the practical. Gauteng residents are again told to apply online through NaTIS. Elsewhere, follow the DLTC's own booking rules. The national list is the learner's licence, your ID, four identical black-and-white photographs (confirm locally), proof of residential address, and the booking fee. The same affidavit-and-bill arrangement applies if the account is not in your name.

Complete the DL1 Application for a Driving Licence at the centre. Keep the receipt. It is the proof of the date and time, and it is checked with the learner's licence before you test. Arrive at the specified time with the originals, not with a screenshot of a booking email.

The practical is run by a qualified examiner. Western Cape Government says its test uses the K53 method and looks at vehicle control, road signs, rules of the road, signals, and whether you can actually drive that class of vehicle. Other provinces should be asked, not assumed. A good instructor teaches the marking method used at your centre, not a generic YouTube version of K53.

If you pass, fingerprints are taken and an eye test is done at the DLTC, or you submit an optometrist form where the centre accepts one. You pay the issuing fee and you get a temporary driving licence while the card is made. Collect the card from the same DLTC that took the application, unless that authority tells you otherwise.

What to take and do on test day

The night before, put the receipt, learner's licence, ID, photographs, address evidence and payment in one folder. Keep a photo of each document on your phone as a backup, not as a substitute. Arrive early enough for parking, queues, security and a vehicle inspection.

Use a vehicle that is legal for the test and mechanically sound. For a Code B light-motor-vehicle test, K53 guidance commonly requires a minimum vehicle length of 3 metres. Confirm that with the instructor or DLTC if you were planning to use a very small car. Before you leave home, check tyres, lights, indicators, brake lights, horn, mirrors, seat belts, handbrake, doors, windscreen, number plates and fuel. A rejected vehicle ends the test before you turn the key.

Wear closed shoes you can feel the pedals in. Listen to the examiner. If an instruction is genuinely unclear, ask. Do not rush a manoeuvre. Observation, signalling, positioning and a safe decision beat a fast one. Never offer, accept or rely on an unofficial payment. Use the formal booking, testing and complaint channels of that authority.

How long the card takes in 2026

Three different figures get quoted as if they were the same promise. They are not.

FigureWhat it actually is
Four to six weeksThe current published estimate on the national gov.za driving-licence page.
21 working days in 2026/27, then 14, then 7Driving Licence Card Account average-production targets from its Annual Performance Plan. Targets, not a delivery date for your card.
About 8 to 12 weeksA planning allowance where local production, dispatch or collection is still slow. Not a statutory deadline. Check current DLCA or licensing-authority notices before you make travel or job plans that depend on the plastic card.

The temporary licence is what lets you drive while you wait, subject to its own terms and expiry. Keep it safe. In the Western Cape, provincial guidance says licences not collected within 120 days are destroyed. Other provinces may publish a different local rule. When you are told the card is ready, collect it at the centre that took the application.

Cabinet has approved a move from five-year to ten-year cards for some light-vehicle codes, but the five-year system is still the one in force until the law actually changes. Do not skip a renewal on the strength of a headline. For the windscreen disc on the car itself, which is a separate document, use the car licence renewal calculator.

The things that actually delay people

What goes wrongHow to avoid it
Wrong photos, or an address proof the centre will not takePhone the DLTC. Write down the photo size, colour rule and how old the bill may be. Western Cape currently wants proof of address not older than three months.
Gauteng walk-in when the instruction is to apply onlineStart on NaTIS if you live in Gauteng. The national pages say this for both the learner's and the driving licence.
Learner's licence expires before the practicalIt cannot be extended. Check both dates when you book. Reapply through the official process if you are going to miss it.
Test vehicle rejectedHave an instructor or mechanic check it, including the 3 metre Code B length rule where it applies.
Failing on the local marking methodTake lessons with someone who tests at that centre and do mock tests on the actual route.
Paying a broker who promises a queue jump or a guaranteed passBook through the DLTC or the official portal. Keep every receipt.
Card sits uncollectedKeep your contact details current. Allow 8 to 12 weeks in 2026 where delays persist, then phone the issuing DLTC.

Book as early as the centre will let you. Compare official DLTCs if your municipality publishes more than one, and pick a lawful slot that fits. Capacity is the bottleneck more often than the test itself.

After you pass

Once the card is in your wallet, the next motoring questions on this site are usually about the car, not the driver. The car licence renewal calculator prices the disc by province and tare. The AARTO demerit points checker and AARTO speeding fine calculator cover the points and the rand amount if a camera catches you. If you later sell the car, how to sell a car privately walks through the yellow form, roadworthy rules and the voetstoots agreement.

If the next step is a trailer or a caravan, check whether Code B is enough before you book another test. The EB licence towing checker uses the plated GVM. 750 kg still passes on Code B. 751 kg needs EB.

A short checklist

Before the learner's appointment: confirm the learner code, the DLTC or the Gauteng online route, the test date and payment method, your ID, photographs (35 mm by 45 mm where that local standard applies), address evidence, the LL1, and the MC form if you are 65 or older.

Before the practical: confirm the vehicle category, learner's-licence expiry, DL1 requirements, photographs, address evidence, booking receipt, vehicle condition, the 3 metre Code B length where it applies, instructor practice, and the route to the centre.

After you pass: keep the temporary licence, note the expected collection date, and collect the card from the same DLTC unless you are told otherwise.

The national pages are the starting point. Your province and your DLTC remain the last word on fees, photographs, proof of address, operating hours and whether you book online or at the counter. Check them the day before you travel.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a driving licence in South Africa?

Get a learner's licence first by passing an eyesight check and a written or computerised knowledge test at a Driving Licence Testing Centre. While that learner's is valid, book and pass the practical driving test for your vehicle category, pay the issuing fee, and collect the credit-card licence from the same centre. Gauteng residents should apply online through NaTIS.

How long is a learner's licence valid in South Africa?

24 months, and it cannot be extended. If it expires before your practical test, you have to apply again through the official process.

How long does a driving licence card take in 2026?

The national government page still publishes four to six weeks. The Driving Licence Card Account's 2026/27 target is an average of 21 working days, which is a target, not a guarantee. Where local delays persist, allow about 8 to 12 weeks and keep the temporary licence safe.

Do Gauteng residents have to apply online?

The national government instructs Gauteng residents to apply online through NaTIS for both the learner's licence and the driving licence. You still attend the DLTC in person for identity checks, the eyesight test, biometrics and the test itself.

What documents do I need for a learner's licence?

Your identity document, photographs (confirm number, size and colour with the DLTC), proof of address if the centre wants it, the booking fee, and the LL1 form completed at the centre. Applicants aged 65 or older also need the Medical Certificate form (MC).

What is the difference between Code B and Code EB?

Both cover the same light vehicles. Code B stops at a trailer whose plated GVM is 750 kg or less. Code EB covers a trailer over 750 kg GVM, and certain light articulated combinations. The 750 kg line is the plated GVM, not how heavy the trailer is empty today.

Can I drive alone on a learner's licence?

No. A learner may drive only while supervised by a licensed driver. If the vehicle category needs a professional driving permit, the supervisor must hold that permit too.

What is the K53 driving test?

K53 is the practical test method used in the Western Cape and taught by most instructors. It assesses vehicle control, road signs, rules of the road, signals and whether you can drive that class of vehicle. Confirm the marking method at your own DLTC rather than assuming every centre uses the same teaching terminology.
