Western Cape is not in this phase, and some other towns still use municipal Criminal Procedure Act fines. Amounts are for a light vehicle (ordinary car, bakkie or motorcycle) under Schedule 3 to the AARTO Regulations, Government Notice R7646 of 30 June 2026. Heavy vehicles, buses and operating-licence minibuses have their own rows. Average speed-over-distance cameras do not apply the 10 km/h buffer. Your actual notice is the one to pay or represent against.

How much is an AARTO speeding fine in South Africa?
Most people searching this are not looking for demerit points. They have a camera flash or a roadside stop and they want the rand amount. The AARTO demerit checker on this site answers the points question. This page answers the money one, from the same Schedule 3.
For a light vehicle the gazetted ladder is simple once you know it. There is no charge at 10 km/h or less over the posted limit. From 11 km/h over, the penalty is R500 and it rises by R500 every 5 km/h, up to R3,000 at 36 to 40 km/h over. More than 40 km/h over is no longer an infringement. It is a criminal offence, a court sets the amount, and it carries 6 demerit points once that system starts. Pay an infringement within 32 days and AARTO halves it.
That is a national schedule, not a municipal price list. It applies in the 62 municipalities where AARTO Phase 2 took effect on 1 July 2026, and in Johannesburg and Tshwane which already ran AARTO. The Western Cape is not in this phase. If your notice was issued under the Criminal Procedure Act in a non-AARTO town, the amount on the notice is the one that counts.
AARTO speeding fines in a 60 km/h zone
Urban 60 km/h is the search people actually type. The same rand amounts apply at 40, 50, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110 and 120 km/h, just shifted so the first charge always starts 11 km/h over whatever the sign says. Type the other limits into the calculator. The table below is the signed 60 km/h slice of Schedule 3, charges 4542 to 4548. The general urban 60 km/h charges (4500 to 4506) are the same amounts.

A 78 km/h reading in a 60 zone is therefore R1,000, or R500 if you pay in 32 days, and 1 demerit point once points go live. A 101 km/h reading in that same zone is not a fine you can pay on the AARTO portal. It goes to court.
The 10 km/h buffer, and when it does not apply
Schedule 3 leaves a 10 km/h gap between the posted limit and the first charge. That is why 70 in a 60, 110 in a 100 and 130 in a 120 are still no speeding fine. It is meant to cover speedometer scatter, not to give you a free 10 km/h. Average speed-over-distance cameras do not apply the buffer. And the moment you are 41 km/h over, the charge is a criminal offence whether a camera or an officer caught you.

Handheld phone use is R2,000 and 3 points, not the R500 many older pages still quote. An adult seatbelt is R500 and 0 points. Skipping a red light in a car is R1,000 and 1 point. Reckless driving, driving under the influence, and driving a vehicle you are not licensed for are criminal offences with no set rand amount.
Discount, courtesy letter, enforcement order
Pay within 32 days and the infringement is halved. Miss that, and a courtesy letter follows with a further 32 days to pay, represent, or nominate another driver. After that an enforcement order can be issued, which blocks eNaTIS transactions, including a driving licence or vehicle disc renewal. Representations go in on Form AARTO 08 through the official portal. Paying is an admission of the infringement. Once demerit points start, paying, arranging to pay, or letting an enforcement order issue are all events that add the points.
Why so many pages still show R400 and 2 km/h steps
A widely copied table, still on aarto.co.za and in 2025 news pieces, lists R400 at 11 to 12 km/h over, then R600, R800, R1,000 in 2 km/h steps, with arrest at 30 km/h over in town. That is not the 30 June 2026 gazette. Government Notice R7646 replaced the previous regulations. The light-vehicle ladder in Schedule 3 is 5 km/h steps from R500, and the criminal threshold is more than 40 km/h over, not 30. If a page still shows R400 at 71 to 72 km/h, it is reprinting the old table.

Are AARTO speeding fines the same in every province?
The Schedule 3 amounts are national, so a 78 km/h reading in a 60 zone is R1,000 wherever AARTO applies. Phase 2, from 1 July 2026, covers 62 municipalities. Johannesburg and Tshwane already ran AARTO. The Western Cape is not in this phase. Outside AARTO areas a municipality can still issue a Criminal Procedure Act fine at a different amount.
How many demerit points do you get for speeding?
On the gazetted 2026 schedule, 11 to 15 km/h over is 0 points, then one extra point per 5 km/h band, up to 5 points at 36 to 40 km/h over. More than 40 km/h over is 6 points and goes to court. Those points are listed because they sit on the same schedule as the rand amounts. They are not being recorded against anyone yet. Government has said the points system is expected in 2027. Can you be arrested for speeding in South Africa?
Yes, once you are more than 40 km/h over the posted limit. In a 60 km/h zone that is 101 km/h and above. In an 80 zone it is 121 km/h, in a 100 zone 141 km/h, on a 120 freeway 161 km/h. That is a criminal offence, not an AARTO infringement, so there is no set fine and no 50 percent discount. A court decides.
How do I pay or check an AARTO fine?
The official portal is online.aarto.gov.za. You can also use the RTIA channels linked from rtia.co.za. This page cannot look up your notice, and it never asks for an ID or licence number. If the notice is wrong, you represent against it (Form AARTO 08) rather than just ignoring it.
Do the old R400 and R250 speeding tables still apply?
Not under the 30 June 2026 regulations. Plenty of articles still reprint a 2 km/h ladder that starts at R400, or even older R250 municipal bands. The gazetted light-vehicle ladder is 5 km/h steps starting at R500. If your notice shows a different amount, it may have been issued under the Criminal Procedure Act in a non-AARTO area, or it may be an older charge. Pay or represent against the notice you actually received.
Does paying a speeding fine stop demerit points?
No. Once the points system starts, points are added when you pay, when you arrange to pay, when an enforcement order is issued, or when a court convicts you. Paying in 32 days only halves the rand amount. It does not keep the points off your licence.
