Pensioner Discounts & Specials Finder (South Africa)
Find every pensioner discount you can claim from 60. Filter by the day you shop, the type, and your age, with the franchise specials honestly flagged.
One thing to know first. Most pensioner "specials" in South Africa are loyalty rewards and national programmes, not shelf discounts that change every week. The big shop perks mostly land on a Wednesday. A handful of stores add their own cash discount, but that differs from branch to branch, so we have flagged those clearly.

Pensioner discounts and specials in South Africa, the honest version
If a family member has just turned 60, you have probably heard there are pensioner specials out there, but tracking down which shop does what on which day is harder than it sounds. The honest picture is this, most pensioner benefits in South Africa are loyalty rewards and national programmes rather than shelf discounts that change every week, and the big retail perks nearly all land on a Wednesday. This free finder pulls the reliable ones into one place so you can filter by the day you are shopping, the kind of help you want, and your age, and see exactly what you can claim. If you would rather read it all in one place, our full guide to senior citizen discounts in South Africa walks through every shop and day.
We have been careful about what we promise. Benefits marked as a national programme, the double points at Clicks and Dis-Chem, the senior bank accounts, the Gautrain discount, the SASSA grant and the SARS tax breaks, apply the same way across the country. The ones marked "varies by branch", such as the cash discounts at some Checkers and SPAR stores, are real but decided store by store, so we tell you to ask rather than pretend they are a fixed rule. That way the tool stays useful without sending you to a till expecting something your branch does not actually offer.
Why Wednesday is the big pensioner day
If you take one thing from this page, make it Wednesday. Pick n Pay gives double Smart Shopper points to shoppers over 60 on Wednesdays, Clicks gives ClubCard Seniors double points the same day, worth roughly 6 percent back in vouchers, and Dis-Chem doubles its 60Plus points on Wednesdays too, prescriptions aside. Builders Warehouse gives 10 percent off with a Builders card on Wednesdays, and many Shoprite and Checkers stores add a free cup of soup on Wednesday mornings. So if you can move your weekly shop to midweek, the same trolley quietly earns a lot more back. Pick Wednesday in the finder above to see them grouped together, alongside the benefits you can use on any day.
The shops that give pensioners a discount every day
Not everyone can shop on a Wednesday, and a few big chains give a pensioner discount on any day of the week. Game takes 10 percent off in store for the over 60s, up to R3,000 of spend, on showing your ID. Makro gives 10 percent off general merchandise and 5 percent off food on weekdays with its free mSeniors card, and throws in priority entry and checkout. For days out, Ster-Kinekor gives SK Club members over 60 a 22 percent discount on most movies on any day but Tuesday. These sit in the finder under shops and under leisure, and they show no matter which day you pick.
The savings that are not in the shops
For most pensioners the largest savings have nothing to do with groceries. A municipal rates rebate can take a serious chunk off your property bill, but you have to apply for it at your municipality, it is never automatic. From 65 SARS gives you an extra tax rebate and lifts your tax-free interest allowance, and our savings interest tax calculator shows what that means for your own savings. If money is tight, the SASSA grant eligibility checker tells you whether you qualify for the old-age grant, and the bank fees tool helps you check whether a senior account is really cheaper for the way you bank. You can browse the rest of our free South African tools and calculators too.
Frequently asked questions
What day do pensioners get discounts in South Africa?
For most national chains the answer is Wednesday. Pick n Pay, Clicks and Dis-Chem all give people over 60 double loyalty points on a Wednesday, and many Shoprite and Checkers stores hand out a free cup of soup on Wednesday mornings. A smaller number of SPAR stores run their pensioner discount on a Tuesday instead, but that is decided store by store. Use the finder above to pick a day and see exactly what applies, including the benefits like the old-age grant and the Gautrain discount that you can use on any day of the week.
Which shops give the best pensioner discount?
It depends what you mean by best. If you want a cash saving at the till, the discount is usually a loyalty one, double points worth roughly 6 percent back in vouchers at Clicks and Dis-Chem on Wednesdays, rather than money off straight away. A handful of Pick n Pay and SPAR stores do knock a few percent off for pensioners, but that is each store's own choice and not a national rule, so the only way to be sure is to ask at your branch. The bigger savings for most pensioners sit outside the shops, in the municipal rates rebate, the senior tax breaks and the Gautrain discount.
How old do you have to be to get a pensioner discount?
Most retail and pharmacy pensioner benefits start at 60, and you almost always need to show your green ID book or smart ID card to prove your age. Some benefits start later, the extra SARS tax rebate and higher tax-free interest allowance kick in at 65, with a further rebate at 75. Senior bank accounts are often open from 55. Set your age in the finder above and it shows only what you can claim, and tells you how many more benefits unlock as you get older.
Which big retailers give pensioners a discount on any day, not just Wednesday?
A few national chains give a straight discount whatever day you shop. Game gives shoppers over 60 ten percent off in store, up to R3,000 of spend, any day, and you only need your ID. Makro gives 10 percent off general merchandise and 5 percent off food on weekdays once you carry its free mSeniors card, plus priority entry and checkout. Builders Warehouse is the exception, its 10 percent pensioner discount is Wednesday only and needs a Builders card. So if you cannot get to the shops midweek, Game and Makro are the ones that still pay off. Pick the day in the finder above and the any-day discounts always show alongside it.
Does Ster-Kinekor or any cinema give pensioners cheaper movies?
Yes. Ster-Kinekor gives people over 60 a 22 percent discount on most movie tickets on any day except Tuesday, once you join the free SK Club, and Tuesday is left out only because Half-Price Tuesday already applies to everyone. Carry your ID. It is one of the better everyday senior perks, and it sits under Leisure and travel in the finder, alongside the SANParks national-park discount and the Southern Sun senior hotel rate.
Do I get a discount on my municipal rates as a pensioner?
Very likely, yes, but you have to apply for it, it is not given automatically. Most municipalities, including Johannesburg, Tshwane and Cape Town, offer pensioners a rebate on their property rates, and it can be a large one. It is usually income-tested and starts at 60 or 65, and the exact rules and amounts differ from one municipality to the next. Contact your municipality with your ID, proof of income and your rates account or title deed to claim it. Because it varies so much by area, this is one to confirm with your own municipality.
Is the SASSA old-age grant a discount?
Not a discount, it is a monthly payment, but it is the single biggest benefit for many pensioners so the finder includes it. The Older Persons Grant pays around R2,400 a month, a little more from age 75, to people over 60 who pass the means test on income and assets. You apply at a SASSA office with your ID and supporting documents. To check whether you would qualify before you go, use our free SASSA grant eligibility checker, which is linked from the tool above.
Do banks give pensioners cheaper accounts?
Most do. The big banks each have a senior account that rebates or waives the monthly fee, usually on condition that you keep a set minimum balance. FNB designs three around age 55, Encore, Prime Life and the higher-income Premier Select (from R300,000 a year), while Absa has Prosperity and Nedbank and Standard Bank run their own senior packages. That condition matters, if you cannot keep the balance, a simple low-fee everyday account can work out cheaper. It is worth comparing the real monthly cost rather than assuming the senior account always wins, which is what our bank fees tool, linked above, helps you do. For each bank's 2026 senior account, the fee and the balance that waives it, see our guide to banking for seniors in South Africa.
Do I need a special card to get pensioner discounts?
For the shop benefits you usually need that retailer's free loyalty card, a Clicks ClubCard registered as ClubCard Seniors, a Dis-Chem 60Plus membership, or a Pick n Pay Smart Shopper card, plus your ID to prove you are over 60. There is no single national pensioner card that works everywhere. For things like the rates rebate, the grant and the Gautrain discount you apply directly to the municipality, SASSA or Gautrain with your documents. Whatever the benefit, keep your ID on you, it is the one thing almost every one of them asks for.
This is general information to help you find pensioner benefits, not financial advice. National programmes are the most reliable, store-level discounts marked "varies by branch" are not guaranteed and change often, so always confirm with the store, bank, municipality or office before you rely on them.
