How this SASSA grant checker works

SASSA pays social grants to millions of South Africans, yet the rules about who qualifies can be hard to follow. Each grant has its own age rules, and most have a means test that looks at your income and, for the older person and disability grants, your assets. This tool walks you through those rules in plain language. You tell it who the grant is for, answer a few quick questions, and it tells you whether you are likely to qualify, what the grant pays, and what documents to take with you. Think of it as a SASSA means test checker and grant calculator in one, a simple SASSA grant qualification checker that lets you check SASSA grant eligibility in a few minutes, before you spend a morning queueing at an office.

It covers the Older Person's Grant for people aged 60 and older, the Disability Grant for adults aged 18 to 59, the Child Support Grant and Foster Child Grant for children in your care, the Care Dependency Grant for a child with a severe disability, Grant-in-Aid for someone who needs full-time care, and the R370 Social Relief of Distress grant for unemployed adults with almost no income. In one place you can check Older Persons Grant eligibility, Disability Grant eligibility, Child Support Grant eligibility, Foster Child Grant eligibility, Care Dependency Grant eligibility, Grant-in-Aid eligibility, War Veterans Grant eligibility, and SRD grant eligibility, each with its own age rules and income limits.

How the means test works

For the Older Person's, Disability and War Veteran's grants, SASSA adds up your income and the value of your assets, and compares them to set limits. The home you live in is not counted as an asset. If you are married, your and your spouse's income and assets are added together and measured against a higher limit. The Child Support Grant and Care Dependency Grant use an income test only, with no asset test. The R370 SRD grant is different again, SASSA checks your bank account every month, so a month over the limit only stops that month and you can qualify again the next.

How to apply for a SASSA grant

For most grants you apply in person at your nearest SASSA office, where you are assessed and asked for your ID, proof of address, and proof of income. The R370 SRD grant is applied for online, on the SASSA WhatsApp line, or on the GovChat app. Applying is always free. You should never pay anyone to apply on your behalf, and SASSA will never charge a fee.

Frequently asked questions

Which SASSA grant do I qualify for?
It depends on your age, your situation, and your income. Use the checker above to see which grant fits, whether that is the Older Person’s, Disability, Child Support, Foster Child, Care Dependency, Grant-in-Aid, or R370 SRD grant.

Do I qualify for a SASSA grant?
If your income is under the means test limit for your grant and you meet the age and residency rules, you are likely to qualify. The checker shows you the exact limit and how your own numbers compare, so you know before you apply.

Which SASSA grants does this checker cover?
The Older Person’s Grant, Disability Grant, Child Support Grant, Foster Child Grant, Care Dependency Grant, Grant-in-Aid, and the R370 SRD grant.

Does this tool decide whether I get a grant?
No. It gives a guide based on what you tell it. SASSA makes the final decision after checking your documents, and where needed a medical assessment or a court order.

How much does the Older Person’s Grant pay in 2026?
It pays R2 400 a month, rising a little at age 75. The Disability and Care Dependency grants also pay R2 400, the Child Support Grant pays R580, the Foster Child Grant R1 290, and the SRD grant R370.

Can I get more than one grant?
A person can usually receive only one of the main grants at a time. Grant-in-Aid is the exception, it is an add-on for someone who already gets a grant and needs full-time care.

Is my information saved?
No. Everything runs in your browser, nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere, and we never ask for your ID number.
