    How much does an electric fence cost in South Africa?

    It depends heavily on wall-top versus freestanding, the number of strands, and the length of your perimeter, which is exactly why a flat per-metre figure is misleading. As a July 2026 worked example using this tool's own defaults, an 80m, 8-strand wall-top fence needs roughly R7 100 in fence materials, wire, brackets, insulators, tensioners, earthing and signs, plus an energiser and a Certificate of Compliance on top, for a full DIY budget of around R11 800. A professionally installed job of the same spec typically runs R9 200 to R13 200 for the wire, brackets and labour alone (see the next question for why that range excludes the energiser). The calculator above gives you both numbers for your own perimeter, strand count and system type.

    What's actually included in a per-metre installed electric fence quote?

    Almost every South African installer's advertised per-metre rate covers the wire, brackets or posts, insulators and the labour to fit them, and it usually bundles in the Certificate of Compliance too. It almost never includes the energiser or the backup battery, those get quoted and bought separately regardless of who installs the fence, DIY or professional. This is the single biggest reason quotes look wildly inconsistent when you compare them: a R95/m quote and a R220/m quote for the same strand count might both be honest, if one has simply left the energiser out of the number and the other has bundled it in. The calculator above keeps these separate for exactly this reason, so you can compare like for like.

    How many strands does an electric security fence need, and how tall is that?

    Wall-top systems commonly use 6, 8, 10 or 12 strands, and freestanding systems 18, 24 or 30, more strands means tighter wire spacing and a harder fence to climb through or over without touching a live wire. SANS 10222-3 caps the maximum spacing between wires at 100mm, which is exactly why the market's real strand counts and fence heights line up so neatly, 6 strands gives 600mm of coverage, 12 strands gives 1,200mm, and so on at 100mm per wire. Wall-top fences must reach at least 1.5m above ground level in total, wall height included. A freestanding fence with its lowest live wire under 1.5m needs a physical barrier fence in front of it instead, see the barrier fence question below.

    Wall-top or freestanding, which electric fence do I need?

    Wall-top mounts directly onto an existing sound boundary wall using brackets, it's cheaper and faster if you already have a wall to work with. Freestanding uses its own posts set in concrete, which you need where there's no wall, such as an open plot boundary or a smallholding, or where you want a taller, harder-to-bridge perimeter than a wall-top system can offer. Freestanding is meaningfully more expensive per metre, our own installed-price reference ranges roughly R95 to R220/m for wall-top against R215 to R410/m for freestanding, since it needs its own structural posts and concrete footings rather than borrowing an existing wall's strength.

    Do I legally need a Certificate of Compliance for an electric fence?

    Yes. Any electric fence erected in South Africa since 1 October 2012 legally requires a Certificate of Compliance (COC) issued by a Registered Person under SANS 10222-3, and you cannot transfer a property with an electric fence on it without a valid COC. A COC doesn't expire on its own, but replacing the energiser or making a major structural change to the fence requires a new one, despite what some pages claim about renewing it every couple of years. Budget roughly R650 to R2,500 for this inspection and certification, it's a professional service fee, not a physical material, which is why the calculator above keeps it as its own separate line rather than folding it into the shopping list.     Can I install an electric fence myself in South Africa?

    Physically installing the fence yourself is legal, the Act does not exclude a property owner from doing their own installation. What you cannot do yourself is sign it off: only a Registered Person, a professionally accredited and listed Electric Fence System Installer, may issue the Certificate of Compliance the fence needs for insurance cover and for a future property sale. In practice this means DIY makes sense as a way to understand your costs and possibly do some of the physical work, but you'll still need a registered installer to inspect and certify the finished fence, which is exactly the budgeting split this calculator is built around, materials and equipment you could source yourself, versus the compliance step you can't skip.

    How is the right energiser size worked out for an electric fence?

    An energiser's joule rating determines how much wire it can drive, but it's rated in total live wire length, which is your number of strands multiplied by your fence's perimeter, not the perimeter alone. A 80m, 8-strand fence has 640m, or 0.64km, of live wire, which is what actually needs sizing for. Wire material matters too, stainless steel carries far less current per joule than galvanised wire of the same gauge, so a coastal stainless installation often needs a noticeably bigger energiser than the same fence built in galvanised wire. The calculator above works this out automatically from Nemtek's own published energiser specifications and recommends the smallest suitable unit for your exact configuration and wire choice.

    Is there a legal limit on electric fence energiser power?

    Yes, in an urban area, defined under SANS 10222-3 as a population density over 400 people per square kilometre, which covers most suburbs and complexes, a single energiser is legally capped at 8 joules of output under any load condition. A very long or high-strand-count urban perimeter can genuinely need more power than that cap allows from one unit, in which case the answer is a synchronised multi-zone system with more than one energiser, not a single oversized one, which would be non-compliant. The calculator above flags this automatically if your own configuration's recommended energiser would exceed the 8J urban cap.

    What does electric fence earthing require?

    SANS 10222-3 requires a minimum of 3 earth electrodes close to the energiser itself, each at least 1.2m long and spaced at least the electrode's own length apart from one another, plus additional electrodes roughly every 30m along a security fence (every 100m on a game fence). As a worked example, the 80m fence above needs 5 earth spikes in total, the 3-spike base near the energiser plus extras along the run. Good earthing isn't optional detail, poor earthing is one of the most common causes of an unreliable or genuinely unsafe electric fence, and it's specifically checked as part of a COC inspection.

    How far apart do electric fence warning signs need to be?

    No more than 10m apart in urban areas, or 100m apart in low-density rural or agricultural areas, plus a sign within 500mm of either side of every gate and within 2m of every corner or bend in the fence line. Each sign must be at least 100x200mm, yellow background, with a black hand-and-flash symbol, mounted 1.5 to 2m above ground. It's an easy requirement to under-budget for on a long perimeter, a 80m urban fence with one gate needs 10 signs on its own, which the calculator above works out from your actual perimeter and gate count rather than a single flat guess.

    What is a barrier fence, and when does my electric fence need one?

    A barrier fence is a physical fence, at least 1.5m high with gaps no wider than 150mm, placed between 200mm and 1,000mm in front of a freestanding electric fence to stop anyone making inadvertent contact with the live wires. SANS 10222-3 requires one wherever a freestanding fence's lowest live wire sits under 1.5m above ground in an area the public can access, or alternatively a low-voltage monitoring system can be used instead of a physical barrier. All three of this calculator's freestanding strand options, 18, 24 and 30 strands, reach 1.8m or taller, comfortably clearing that 1.5m threshold, so the barrier fence rule mainly matters if you're building something shorter or non-standard than the calculator's own presets.

    Galvanised or stainless steel electric fence wire, which should I choose?

    Galvanised wire is the standard, cheaper choice and works well almost everywhere in South Africa. Stainless steel resists salt-air corrosion far better, worth the extra cost within a few kilometres of the coast, but it carries noticeably less current per joule of energiser output, so a stainless installation often needs a bigger, pricier energiser than the same fence built in galvanised wire would. The calculator above prices both and resizes the recommended energiser automatically when you switch, so the true all-in cost difference between the two, not just the wire price, is visible before you commit.

    How much does an electric fence energiser cost in South Africa?

    As a July 2026 South African reference, expect roughly R3,500 for a small entry-level single-zone unit suited to a short domestic perimeter, up to R8,000 or more for a large-capacity unit capable of driving 10km or more of live wire. The right size depends on your total live wire length, strands multiplied by perimeter, not on the perimeter alone, see the energiser sizing question above. A battery backup, typically R450 to R650 for a standard 12V 7Ah unit, is usually bought alongside it so the fence stays live through load shedding or a power cut.

    Does an electric fence still work during load shedding?

    Yes, provided it has a charged battery backup, which is standard on almost every installed system in South Africa given how routine power cuts have become. The energiser automatically switches to battery power the moment mains electricity drops, and a standard 7Ah battery typically keeps a domestic system running for several hours. Some of the smaller energiser models even ship with a battery included as standard rather than sold separately, which the calculator above accounts for so you're not charged twice for the same battery.

    Why is my materials estimate so much lower than an installer's quote?

    It shouldn't be, once you compare like for like. This calculator's fence-materials total, wire, brackets or posts, insulators, tensioners, earthing and signs, is deliberately the same scope as what a professional installer's advertised per-metre rate covers, so the gap between the two is genuinely the installer's labour and margin, correctly tensioning every wire, drilling into a wall or setting posts in concrete, and their own COC inspection cost. Both totals then still need the energiser, battery and COC added on top, those are quoted separately by almost every installer too, which is why the calculator above keeps them as their own clearly labelled lines rather than baking them into either total.
