Sides are treated as a closed rectangle for corner and pier working. Street and lateral boundaries often have different allowed heights under municipal by-laws (commonly 1.8m street, 2.1m lateral, but this varies), so heights can differ per side.
Where the ground falls by more than 0.3m along a wall's length, SANS 10400-K reduces the allowable height by (fall minus 0.3m). Applied to every side. Leave at 0 for flat ground.

SANS 10400-K doesn't size footings itself, it routes that to SANS 10400-H and your soil conditions, so these are typical South African boundary-wall strip footing dimensions, not a tabulated figure. Adjust to your engineer or geotech's advice if you have one.

Most South African boundary wall pages are either a lead-gen quote form with no numbers at all, or a bricks-and-cement quantity calculator that has no idea whether the wall you're planning is even legal. SANS 10400-K deemed-to-satisfy boundary wall heights
The maximum height a freestanding brick boundary wall can reach without an engineer's design, straight from Table 17 of SANS 10400-K, as republished in AfriSam's own boundary wall guide. A 220mm one-brick wall is fine unpiered up to 1.8m, the common street-boundary limit, but no thickness reaches a 2.1m lateral boundary without piers.

Frequently asked questions
Is a 1.8m boundary wall legal in South Africa without piers?
Depends on the thickness. A 220mm (one-brick) wall is exactly at the deemed-to-satisfy cap for 1.8m with no piers needed, per Table 17 of SANS 10400-K. A 110mm (half-brick) wall is not, it's capped at 1.0m unpiered, and needs piers, a Z-shaped plan or a thicker wall to legally reach 1.8m. Most municipal by-laws also cap street boundary walls around 1.8m, though the exact limit varies by municipality, so check both the SANS table and your local by-law.
Do I need piers for a boundary wall?
Only if you want to exceed the unpiered height cap for your wall's thickness, 1.0m for 110mm, 1.8m for 220mm. Piers let you build higher within the deemed-to-satisfy rules: a 220mm wall with piers on one side, sized 660x440mm at 3.2m centres, reaches 2.3m, useful for a 2.1m lateral boundary common under many by-laws. Piers both sides or a Z-shaped plan reach even higher for the same thickness.
What size piers does my boundary wall need?
It's tabulated, not a rule of thumb, and depends on your wall's thickness, the arrangement you choose and the height you need. For a 220mm wall with piers on one side, SANS 10400-K specifies 660x440mm piers at 3.2m centres to reach 2.3m. A 110mm wall with piers both sides needs 440x440mm piers at 2.2m centres to reach 1.6m. This calculator looks the correct combination up for your inputs and states it plainly, rather than leaving you to guess.
What's a Z-shaped boundary wall?
A wall built with a zigzag plan instead of piers projecting off a straight run, using the fold itself for lateral stability. It reaches the greatest height for a given thickness of any arrangement in the SANS 10400-K tables, a 220mm Z-shaped wall reaches 2.8m, versus 2.3m for the same thickness with piers on one side, at the cost of a less space-efficient footprint along the boundary.
Does a boundary wall need an engineer?
Only if it doesn't fit the deemed-to-satisfy tables, or if it retains soil. A freestanding wall built to the SANS 10400-K height, thickness and pier specifications in Table 17 is deemed to comply with the National Building Regulations without individual engineering sign-off. Anything taller than the table allows for its thickness and pier arrangement, or any wall holding back a slope or soil, needs a professional engineer to design and certify it, and most insurance policies exclude an uncertified retaining wall entirely.
How far apart do control joints go in a boundary wall?
No more than 10m apart, per AfriSam's guidance for freestanding brick walls. All masonry expands and contracts with moisture and temperature, and a long unbroken run without a movement joint is how boundary walls develop diagonal stepped cracks. A 30m run needs 2 joints splitting it into three roughly-equal segments, this calculator works that out for each side automatically.
Does a boundary wall need a damp-proof course?
No. Freestanding walls are specifically excluded from the horizontal DPC requirement that applies to buildings, per SANS 10400-K clause 4.2.4.3. It's a common item to see quoted that shouldn't be there, worth checking a contractor's quote against.
Why does ground slope matter for boundary wall height?
Because SANS 10400-K reduces your allowable height once the ground level difference along the wall's run exceeds 0.3m, by the amount over that threshold. A wall on a run with a 0.5m fall loses 0.2m off its allowable height compared to the same wall on flat ground, which can turn a wall that looks compliant on paper into one that isn't, once the actual site slope is accounted for.
How much does a boundary wall cost per metre in South Africa?
Contractor quotes, materials and labour together, typically run R1,200 to R1,800 per metre for a plastered brick wall and R1,800 to R2,500 for face brick, as of 2026. Materials alone, what this calculator works out, sit well below that since labour, transport and the contractor's margin are excluded, so a lower materials figure isn't a sign the estimate is wrong, it's simply not the same number as an all-in quote.
How many bricks are in a square metre of wall?
52 standard bricks per m² for a 110mm half-brick (single-leaf) wall, 105 per m² for a 220mm one-brick (double-leaf) wall, before wastage. Add roughly 20% on top for bricklaying wastage, the standard South African cement industry allowance, to get an order quantity rather than a bare theoretical count.
Should I plaster or leave a boundary wall face brick?
It's a cost and maintenance trade-off, not a compliance question. Face brick needs no ongoing paint maintenance but costs more upfront and shows every irregular brick and mortar joint. Plastered and painted walls cost less in materials, hide imperfections, but need repainting every several years as the finish weathers. This calculator prices both so you can compare on your own numbers rather than a rule of thumb.

Does this calculator cover vibracrete or precast concrete walls?
No, not yet. This calculator only covers 110mm and 220mm freestanding brick walls, where the sourced brick, mortar and SANS 10400-K pier data is available. Precast concrete, or vibracrete, panel walling uses a different construction method and a different section of the standard, and is not in this tool. If you're comparing options, market rates for installed precast walling typically run somewhat lower per metre than plastered brick, but always get a like-for-like quote since height, panel style and post spacing all move the price.
Does this calculator cover maxi brick (140mm) walls?
No, not yet. Maxi brick, laid flat to give a 140mm wall thickness, is a common South African boundary wall build, but this calculator currently covers 110mm (half-brick) and 220mm (one-brick) walls only, the two thicknesses with cross-checked SANS 10400-K pier and height data. A 140mm maxi brick wall is capped lower without piers than a 220mm wall and needs its own verified pier table before this tool would publish figures for it.
