Long Weekend Leave Planner 2026 to 2028: Maximise Your Time Off
A free tool that turns South Africa's 2026, 2027 and 2028 public holidays into a ranked list of smart leave plays, so you spend the fewest annual leave days for the longest breaks, with an add-to-calendar export for each one.
South Africa has twelve public holidays, and a few of them sit just one or two working days away from a weekend. Book those days as leave and a normal weekend stretches into a long break, sometimes ten days off for only three or four leave days. This free tool does the counting for you. It ranks the smartest leave plays for 2026, 2027 and 2028, shows exactly which days to book, and lets you send each plan straight to your calendar. Everything runs in your browser.
Browse lists each smart break on its own, ranked so you can pick the ones you want. Optimise takes your whole year's leave allowance and works out the exact dates to book for the most time off.
Free long weekends (no leave needed)
Public holidays that already land next to a weekend, so you get a long weekend for zero leave days.
How the leave planner works
The idea is simple. A public holiday on a Tuesday means you only need to book the Monday to turn it into a four day weekend. A holiday on a Thursday means booking the Friday does the same. The planner looks at every public holiday in 2026, 2027 and 2028, works out where these gaps fall, and tells you the fewest leave days that join a holiday to the nearest weekend. Each result shows the leave days to book, the total days off you end up with, and a small calendar so you can see the unbroken run at a glance. Sort by best value to see the highest payoff first, or sort by date to plan the year in order.
How to maximise your annual leave in South Africa
The Basic Conditions of Employment Act gives most South African workers fifteen working days of annual leave a year, which works out to twenty one calendar days. The trick to maximising it is to spend those days right next to public holidays and weekends rather than in the middle of an ordinary week. Book the Monday after a Sunday holiday, or the Friday before a long weekend, and a single leave day can buy you a four day break. Do that across the whole year and fifteen leave days can turn into well over thirty days off. That is what this planner is for, it finds the best leave days to take in 2026, 2027 and 2028 so your annual leave stretches as far as it possibly can.
Optimise your whole year
The browse view lists every smart break on its own. The optimise view does the opposite, it takes your full annual leave allowance for one year and works out the single best way to spend it. Pick the year, set how many leave days you have with the slider, and choose what you are after. Longest single break aims everything at one long holiday. Most long weekends spreads your days into as many three day weekends as possible. Balanced sits in between, building a handful of week long breaks. You can also add blackout periods for dates you cannot take off, like a work shutdown or a busy season, and the planner will plan around them. The result is a colour coded view of your year and a single calendar file with every leave day marked. The maths runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
South African public holidays in 2026, 2027 and 2028
There are twelve public holidays a year under the Public Holidays Act, New Year's Day, Human Rights Day, Good Friday, Family Day, Freedom Day, Workers' Day, Youth Day, National Women's Day, Heritage Day, the Day of Reconciliation, Christmas Day and the Day of Goodwill. Two rules decide how useful each one is in a given year. When a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday becomes a public holiday in its place, which is good news because it hands you a Monday off. When a holiday falls on a Saturday, there is no replacement day, so that holiday is simply lost. The planner applies both rules for you, so what you see is the real day off, not the date on the calendar.
The best long weekends to plan for
The festive season is the standout. In 2026 Christmas Day falls on a Friday and New Year's Day falls on the following Friday, so booking the four working days in between gives you ten days off in a row. Easter is the other big one, with Good Friday and Family Day bracketing a weekend, and the days around it open up a full week away for very little leave. April is generous too, with Freedom Day and Workers' Day landing a few days apart. The planner shows a free long weekends section as well, the holidays that already touch a weekend and cost you nothing at all.
A note on the 2026 election day
South Africa holds local government elections in 2026, and election days are usually declared public holidays. The date is not a fixed statutory holiday and has to be proclaimed in the Government Gazette, so it may not be confirmed when you read this. There is a switch at the top of the tool to include 4 November 2026 if you want to see how it would change your options, with a clear reminder to confirm it before you book.
Frequently asked questions
How many days off can I get for the fewest leave days?
In 2026 the festive season is the best, where four leave days between Christmas and New Year give you ten days off. Around Easter and the April holidays you can reach nine or ten days off for three or four leave days. The tool ranks these for you.
What happens when a public holiday falls on a weekend?
A holiday on a Sunday moves to the Monday, so you still get a day off. A holiday on a Saturday is lost, with no replacement day. The planner already accounts for both, so the days it shows are the days you actually get.
Is 4 November 2026 a public holiday?
Local election days are normally declared public holidays, but the date must be proclaimed first, so treat it as likely rather than certain. Use the switch in the tool to include it, and confirm it before booking leave.
Can I add a plan to my calendar?
Yes. Every leave play has an add to calendar button that downloads a calendar file with the leave days marked and a reminder to book them, ready for Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook.
Does it cover 2026, 2027 and 2028?
Yes. The tool covers all three years and only shows breaks that are still ahead, so it stays useful as the year goes on.
How does the optimise my year mode work?
You tell it the year, how many leave days you have, and whether you want one long break, many long weekends, or a balanced mix. It then works out the exact days to book for the most consecutive time off, and you can add blackout dates you are not allowed to take. It runs in your browser, so your inputs stay private.
Can I block out dates I cannot take as leave?
Yes. Add one or more blackout periods, like a December shutdown or a busy month, and the optimiser will never place leave inside them while it plans the rest of your year.
How do I maximise my annual leave in South Africa?
Take your leave right next to public holidays and weekends instead of in the middle of a week. A holiday on a Tuesday means booking the Monday turns it into a four day weekend, and a holiday on a Thursday means booking the Friday does the same. The optimise mode does this across your whole annual leave allowance and shows the exact dates to book for the most time off.
Can I turn 15 leave days into more days off?
Yes. Fifteen working days is the standard annual leave allowance under the Basic Conditions of Employment Act. Spent around the 2026, 2027 and 2028 public holidays with the optimise mode, those fifteen days can become well over thirty days off, and the festive season alone gives you ten days off for only four leave days.
